Rogue Traders

Alert message sent 09/07/2020 22:47:00

Information sent on behalf of Humberside Police

An Bogus caller has been reported in your
neighbourhood.

Humberside Police is asking residents to be vigilant following reports of suspected rogue traders targeting the Bilton Grange estate area.

The suspects have targeted several residents offering to carry out garden jobs for an amount of money. They were asking for money up front before doing a small amount of work and not returning to finish the job in hand.
The suspects has been described as two men one older than the other. Older male was described as a tanned male who had an accent. They used two different vehicles, both white vans one described as a transit type with the wording “C PRICE” on the side and the other a smaller van.

Practice good doorstep behaviour, if a caller knocks on your door you should:-

1 – Keep front and back doors locked (with keys taken out), even when at home.
2 – Stop and think, is anyone expected?
3 – Look through spy hole or window to identify caller.
4 – Put door chain or door bar on first before opening the door, and keep it on whilst talking to caller.
5 – Check their identity card carefully even if the caller has a pre-arranged appointment.
6 – Look up the phone number of who the caller represents in the phone directory; ring to verify the callers’ identity and do not use the phone number on the identity card, as this may be fake.

It is always best practise to go by recommendation from a friend/family member when appointing a trader to do work for you.

Good, reputable traders will not cold call and ask for money up front for jobs.
