Crime Prevention Advice

Crime Prevention Advice - Vehicle Garage & Shed Crime - protect yourself

Recently over the last couple of months there has been an increase in thefts from motor vehicles, garages and sheds due to them being left unlocked and opportunists being in the area. It is often a spur of the moment decision made and takes less than a minute to walk up your drive and try handles.

With the warmer weather and lighter nights, signals an increase in these type of offences. We send this message not to frighten you, but to make you more aware and a timely reminder to ensure that your property is locked and secure and that you don’t leave valuable items in your vehicle.

Due to this warmer weather we may leave, say our windows down on our car , forget to put your bicycle away in the shed or  garden tools left out. So, never leave cash, credit cards,  mobile phones, vehicle documents, sat navs or other valuables/items in the car.
(If you have no choice but to do so, make sure they are in the boot before you set off - thieves may be watching you park!)

Keys - keep them safe

Many of the these thefts that have occurred are as a result of people leaving these places insecure. A few seconds when you're not looking, is all a thief needs to remove valuable items from your unlocked property.
Safer Neighbourhoods and Humberside Police have, in the past, been out trying car door handles, checking sheds, garage doors and side gates. We will look to do this in the future,  to identify unlocked, vulnerable locations or vehicles, to provide the necessary advice to stop residents becoming a victim of theft.
Prevention is always better than detection. If everyone took basic crime prevention measures thefts could be reduced by as much as 40%.

If you need advice on anything from above or anything in or around your neighbourhood, feel free to approach one of our officers on the beat.

Stay Safe and If you should find you are in immediate danger, contact the police on 999 otherwise call 101
