Information sent on behalf of Humberside Police

Unwanted / bogus callers

In August Humberside Police received reports of two males selling door to door who were pushy and forceful in their sales technique.
These males had credentials which were in order and no reports of any crimes have been reported linked to these males.
As the males were in the Beverley area I thought I would send a message out to reassure and give general advice regards bogus callers / unwanted callers.

- Always keep your front and rear doors locked.
- If you have an unannounced caller use your spyhole if you have one.
- If you are not sure, don’t open the door.
- If you decide to open the door place this on a chain if you have one.
- Always demand to see identification or licences (pedlars licence for door to door sales.) and check these carefully. - Close the door whilst you do. If you are still unsure call the company concerned to corroborate their identity. Bogus callers can be convincing and persuasive and will use props to try convince you.
- Never let someone in your house because you don’t want to seem rude or unsympathetic.
- If you have any doubts ask them to return when there is someone with you.
- Report any suspicious activity / bogus callers via 999/101 depending on the urgency.

Most people who call at your home will be genuine, but sometimes this is not the case. Following the above principles will help stop people who intend to trick their way into your home.

Remember – If you have any doubts, keep them out!
