Middle lane driver reported for traffic offence

On Saturday 19 January 2019, one of our Roads Policing Officers was patrolling the M62 near Howden. During this journey, the officer followed a vehicle which remained in the middle lane of the motorway for over 4 miles despite the lack of traffic and lack of any requirement to overtake other vehicles.

The vehicle was subsequently stopped and dealt with for careless driving. The driver will now have to pay a fine, attend a driver retraining course or attend court.

"You should always drive in the left-hand lane when the road ahead is clear. If you are overtaking a number of slower-moving vehicles, you should return to the left-hand lane as soon as you are safely past. Slow-moving or speed-restricted vehicles should always remain in the left-hand lane of the carriageway unless overtaking. You MUST NOT drive on the hard shoulder except in an emergency or if directed to do so by the police, traffic officers in uniform or by signs."

More advice can be found in the Highway Code which is available for free online here -->
