Crime Alert - Theft of a Pedal Cycle

Dear Residents,

We are writing to remind residents to take extra care when securing their bicycles.

Bicycle theft can happen quickly, particularly when bikes are left unattended or secured with inadequate locks. Taking a few simple precautions can significantly reduce the risk of becoming a victim of theft.

Please consider the following crime-prevention advice:

Always use a good-quality D-lock or heavy-duty chain to secure your bicycle.

Where possible, secure the frame and both wheels to a solid, fixed cycle stand.

Avoid relying on inexpensive cable locks alone, as these can be easier to cut.

Do not leave your bike unlocked, even if you are only going into the shop for a few minutes.

Avoid leaving valuables such as lights, bags, helmets or accessories attached to your bicycle.

Consider registering your bicycle and recording its frame number, photographs and identifying features. This can assist with identification and recovery if it is stolen.

If available, use a busy, well-lit area with good visibility and CCTV coverage.

If you see anyone acting suspiciously around bicycles, report your concerns to store staff or the police. Do not put yourself at risk or confront anyone.

Remember: Lock it, record it, protect it.

To reduce the risk of your pedal cycle being stolen, please read through the below advice

Contact your local Neighbourhood Team to arrange for your cycle to be marked, or visit a bike marking event.

You have spent money on your cycle, so buy the best quality lock you can. View the attachment to see which standard of lock is best for you.

Try and double lock your cycle, this will allow you to secure the frame and both wheels to a cycle stand.

Lock your cycle, even when it is at home, consider alarms and additional security for sheds.

Only leave your cycle in public if you really need to, consider using a cycle hub.
