Hull Road, road safety - not just speeders |
||
|
This evening I worked with your local ward councillor, Mr Jon Dimberline and his Community Speed Watch group, on Hull Road in Withernsea. Some 15 vehicles were recorded in excess of the marked 30mph limit by the CSW team during a two hour period. All those drivers will receive a letter advising them they have been caught in excess of the limit and warned to drive more carefully in future. However, of the vehicles stopped by me regarding their manner of driving, one highlighted just how important it is that we stop and check cars for safety issues. I am a firm believer in giving people words of advice rather than tickets for speeding which result in points and fines as it often has a far greater impact. Also it gives time to check vehicles' roadworthiness, and one car stopped tonight was found to have the cord exposed on both its front tyres. This will cost the driver 6 penalty points and a substantial fine, but it could have cost the driver their life. Tyres are the only point of contact a car has with the road, affecting handling and more importantly stopping ability. It is so important that you check them before every journey.
