Staying safe while keeping cool at home

Hi everyone,

🙋‍♀️ Hands up if you’ve bought extra fans to cope with the recent heat or dug one out from storage that hasn’t been used in a while?

They’re great for keeping everyone cool, but whether they’re new or newly rediscovered, it’s important to make sure we’re not creating a fire risk at the same time.

Here are a few quick and easy ways to stay safe at home:

If you’re using an older fan from storage, check it over first for any damage, dust build‑up, or worn cables before switching it on

Buy new fans from a trusted retailer and make sure the plug or charging pack is suitable for UK use

Plug directly into a wall socket where possible - avoid overloading extension leads

Keep cables tidy and free from furniture to prevent damage or trip hazards

If you’re using a rechargeable fan, follow the charging instructions and avoid leaving it charging unattended, overnight or near an exit

Make sure smoke alarms are working on every level of your home and test them regularly

Health advice for staying cool in hot weather:

Keep out of the sun at the hottest time of the day, between 11am and 3pm

If you are going to do a physical activity (for example exercise or walking the dog), plan to do these during times of the day when it is cooler such as the morning or evening

Keep your home cool by closing windows and curtains in rooms that face the sun

If you do go outside, cover up with suitable clothing such as an appropriate hat and sunglasses, seek shade and apply sunscreen

Drink plenty of fluids and limit your alcohol intake

Check on family, friends and neighbours who may be at higher risk of becoming unwell, and if you are at higher risk, ask them to do the same for you

Know the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke and what to do if you or someone else has them.
