Safer ways to dispose of bulky and recyclable items

Dear Resident,

We are raising awareness following a recent increase in bonfires being used to burn unwanted furniture and other household items.

Many of the items being burned, such as sofas, wood, plastics and treated materials, should not be burned and can instead be recycled or disposed of safely using existing services provided by Hull City Council.

Why this matters

As the weather becomes warmer, bonfires present a serious risk of fires spreading, particularly in gardens, alleyways and open spaces. Fires can quickly get out of control and pose a danger to:

Nearby homes and property

People’s health, especially those with breathing conditions

Wildlife, pets and gardens

They can also divert our firefighters from attending more serious incidents.

Safer alternatives to bonfires

Hull City Council Bulky Item Collection offers a bulky household waste collection service for large items such as furniture.

One free bulky collection per household in a 12 month period, for up to 5 single items

Additional collections can be booked for a small charge

Items must be placed outside your property on the agreed collection day

The service is available to residents within the Hull City boundary

Household Waste Recycling Centres

Many items can be taken to your local Household Waste Recycling Centre, where they can be reused or recycled safely and responsibly.

Using the recycle centres and bulky item collections helps reduce the risk of fire spreading and impact of smoke, helping to keep our neighbourhoods safe and pleasant for everyone.
