I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Vehicle crime (theft from or theft of), which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. Dear Residents,
I am writing this letter in relation to an increase of thefts from vehicles and vehicle interferences incidents during December 2025 in your area.
I would like to take this opportunity to reassure you that Humberside Police are looking into these matters, in keeping with our aims of Protecting Communities, Targeting Offenders, Protecting the Public and seeking justice for Victims.
Don't let thieves get an easy ride. Follow these simple rules to protect your vehicle from thieves.
1. Lock your vehicle Lock your car every time, close windows, never leave it running unattended, and check mirrors fold in - unfolded mirrors signal it’s unlocked. Never leave your car running unattended (e.g., while de-icing), as it’s illegal and can invalidate insurance.
2. Keep the keys safe Modern cars are hard to steal without keys- keep them hidden, away from doors, and never let them out of sight when selling. Thieves may fish keys through letterboxes or clone them during viewings.
Keyless entry cars are vulnerable to ‘relay theft,’ where thieves capture your key’s signal from a few metres away - even inside your home - to unlock and start your car. Consider faraday bags / boxes to prevent this. You can usually deactivate the ‘keyless entry’ feature.
3. Be aware of carjackers Stay alert even when inside your car. Keep doors locked in traffic, leave space to escape, and pull over somewhere safe if bumped. If threatened, give up the keys and call 999. Modern trackers can help immobilise stolen vehicles.
4. Park responsibly Avoid parking in dark or secluded areas. Choose well-lit, busy streets or car parks with staff or a Park Mark safer parking award for added security. To find one, simply check out the ‘Park Mark’ website.
5. Watch for illegal tow trucks Watch for suspicious tow trucks - unbranded or no uniform - and report immediately. Park in height-restricted car parks to deter illegal removals. Fit a Thatcham-rated alarm with tracking, immobilisation, and movement sensors for extra protection.
6. Fit good in-car security locks Add physical security like Sold Secure-rated steering wheel locks, pedal boxes, and gear stick locks- Diamond-rated options resist even angle grinders. Consider an aftermarket immobiliser approved by your manufacturer for extra protection.
7. Double-check electronic locking Signal jammers can stop your car from locking. Always check it’s locked before walking away. If unsure, lock manually and scan for anyone nearby - thieves often move on if they know they’ve been seen.
8. Before owning, check for cloning Vehicle cloning often involves stolen plates. When buying a car, always check the DVLA V5 document and ensure the VIN and engine numbers match across multiple locations on the vehicle.
9. Secure your port Many modern vehicles are fitted with engine management diagnostic ports, which can unlock and start your vehicle. If your vehicle has this type of port, consider fitting a lockable cover.
Please stay vigilant, if you see anything suspicious, have a query or you’re a victim of crime…contact the Police.
Ways to contact the Police: o Call 101 – Non-emergency number o Call 999 – Emergency number o Humberside Police website reporting facility.
