Adverse Weather Tips |
||
|
The Met Office and the UKHSA have issued weather warnings and cold weather health warnings which affect the Yorkshire and Humber area, commencing now until the weekend. Temperatures are likely to to fall below zero with a cold northerly wind and we will see wintery showers with some persistent snow falling over high ground. The road network may be adversely affected with settling snow, particularly on the higher routes in the Yorkshire Wolds. To stay safe in winter driving, slow down, leave extra space between vehicles, and avoid harsh braking and acceleration. Prepare your vehicle for winter by checking its condition and carrying an emergency kit, and if you must drive, stick to main roads and only travel when necessary. Please see the below for further guidance and advice on keeping yourself and others safe on the roads over this coming winter. Driving tips Slow down: Reduce your speed and increase the following distance to as much as ten times the normal distance. Gentle inputs: Accelerate gently and use a higher gear to avoid wheel spin. Take off in second gear if possible. Avoid sudden braking or sharp steering. Cornering: Brake before you enter a bend, and if you skid, steer gently into the direction of the skid. Do not brake during a skid. Use gears effectively: Use a low gear to go downhill to let the engine help slow the car. If you are driving an electric or hybrid vehicle, adjust the regenerative braking to a lower setting. Lights: Use dipped headlights when visibility is poor and fog lights when visibility drops to less than 100 meters. Be aware: Watch for other road users, including pedestrians and cyclists. Be extra cautious at junctions where road markings may be invisible. Do not assume roads have been gritted, and don't follow other vehicles too closely in their wheel tracks, as compressed snow can be icier. Gritting lorries: Give gritting lorries plenty of room, and never overtake them. Vehicle and personal preparation Service your car: Get a winter service to check the tyres, electrics, coolant, and other essential components. Check visibility: Ensure your screen wash is topped up and your wiper blades are in good condition. Pack an emergency kit: Carry essentials like a phone, charger, blankets, warm clothes, sturdy boots, a shovel, de-icing equipment, a first aid kit, and some food and drink. Dress appropriately: Wear comfortable, dry footwear and warm clothing, including a waterproof coat, hat, and gloves, in case you have to get out of your vehicle. If you get stuck Stay calm: Do not panic. Clear snow: Use a shovel to clear snow from around the wheels. Try rocking the vehicle gently from side to side and use a light touch on the accelerator. You can also put sand, gravel, or salt in the path of the wheels for traction. Stay with your vehicle: If you have to abandon your car, stay with it until help arrives. Make yourself visible to other road users and park in a way that doesn't block traffic. Call for help: If you must leave your vehicle, call the police to let us know, especially if you're obstructing a road. Lets ALL stay safe this winter.
