Gift Card Scam Warning

Dear Resident,

Humberside Police have seen an increase in the amount of fraud victims who are asked to purchase gift cards as a form of payment to the fraudsters. They will ask the victim to send them the code on the back of the gift card and sell it on the dark web for a lesser value. It is effectively a form of money laundering.  

The types of fraud we particularly see this in are where fraudsters purport to be from the Police, HMRC, Friend or workplace manager. We also see them being purchased a lot in cases of Romance Fraud; however, this list is not exhaustive, and the fraudsters often change their approach to avoid detection. 

If you have been a victim of a scam, then report it to Action Fraud or by calling 03001232040, alternatively by call Humberside Police via 101.
