Tips to keep you bike safe

Dear Resident,

With the summer months and warmer weather now with use, people across the Humberside area will be looking at using their bikes more often.

With the increased use of bikes, we often see an increase in bike thefts, so I wanted to take this opportunity to provide you with 5 tips to help you keep your bike safe during the summer and for the rest of the year.

  • If you need to leave your bike, try and leave it in a public area that is covered by CCTV.
  • If practicable, lock your bike using 2 quality locks to a bike stand, this will allow you to also lock the wheels and prevent them from being stolen.
  • Use the best quality locks you can buy; we recommend Sold Secure Gold Standard locks or above. (See the attached leaflet for more information)
  • If you leave your bike, ensure you take off any removable items, such as bike computers or easily removable lights.
  • Register your bike with Bike Register and get it security marked, local Neighbourhood Policing Teams across Humberside will be holding marking events, where you can get your bike marked for free.
  •

Cycling is an excellent way to help you stay fit and healthy, so follow the above tips, which will make sure your bike is less attractive to an opportunist thief.

Further crime prevention advice can be found on the Secured by Design website here.
