Behind the Badge: Our Armed Policing Unit

The work of our Armed Policing Unit often goes unseen, but their expertise and rigorous training underpins their ability to protect and save lives every single day.

When you think of authorised firearms officers (AFOs), it’s easy to picture solely the firearms they carry, but there’s much more to these officers than meets the eye.

Our Armed Policing Unit consists of a range of backgrounds, each bringing a wealth of experience to the role. Their primary responsibility is responding to firearms incidents 24/7, 365 days a year.

In addition, the unit supports planned firearms operations, assists local policing teams and provides reassurance to the public with visible patrols in crowded places, airports and ferry terminals.

Armed Policing Inspector Andy Parsons highlights the critical role the unit plays: “Our officers are highly trained professionals whose primary focus is the protection and preservation of life.

“The decision to deploy armed officers is always made with utmost care, following strict protocols and an exacting command chain to ensure every action is proportionate and necessary.

“Many people are unaware of the exceptional training required to join and remain part of this unit. Officers undergo a comprehensive 13-week Initial Firearms Course covering shooting competencies, tactics, communication, and teamwork. Upon completion, they continue their development with specialised Tactical Medical (TAC-MED) training, enabling them to support ambulance and other divisions by responding to critical injuries.

“To maintain their role as AFO’s, officers must pass stringent physical fitness and medical tests. They must also attend regular refresher training, every 10 weeks, spanning shooting tactics, building searches, vehicle tactics and more, to ensure they remain at the peak of their abilities to respond effectively under pressure.

“They are consistently assessed and supported to ensure they uphold the highest standards of professionalism and skill. Their primary mission is to save lives and protect communities, with the use of their weapons being an absolute last resort.

“The unit also plays a critical role in broader force functions, including supporting incidents with taser deployment, specialist driving, and medical response. These diverse capabilities reflect the unit’s adaptability and the varied demands they face.

“All deployments of firearms officers are meticulously planned and recorded, with each incident subject to scrutiny through monthly reviews and quarterly assessment panels.

“The Armed Policing Unit is a testament to the dedication, professionalism, and humanity of those who carry the responsibility, and we are committed to ensuring the safety of our communities.”
