Dear Resident,
Most burglaries across the Humberside Police area are committed by opportunists. People who are looking to commit a burglary will travel around, whilst actively looking for an easy target.
Two of the things that burglars do look out for is open windows and doors that are unlocked, they do this because both provide easy and almost silent access to a property.
Currently 1 in 3 burglaries within Humberside are committed where the burglar has gained entry through an open window or an unlocked door.
If you could ensure your doors are locked, even when you are in the house, and your windows (especially ground floor) are closed & secured so they cannot be opened to allow someone to climb in, you will reduce the risk of becoming a victim of burglary by a third.
UPVC windows will have locks on them with keys, please also remember to use those window locks and removed the keys from them. The keys can be placed out of sight, but still close to the window in case they need to be opened quickly. The reason behind this is if the key is there, a burglar only needs to make a small hole in the glass to be able to open the window and climb in. If the key isn't there, they would have to make a large hole in the glass, which will make more noise, and increase the chance they may be seen or caught. In most cases the burglar will move onto a property where there is an easier way to gain entry.
