At Humberside Police, the safety and well-being of everyone in our custody is of priority. While many associate police custody with adults, a significant number of young and vulnerable individuals are detained each year. In Humberside we have two full time custody facilities, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week. So far this year at Birchin Way Custody Suite in Grimsby, we have detained 6935, with 419 of these being under the age of 18. These young people often face unique circumstances that require extra care. Many juveniles and vulnerable individuals in custody have been victims of criminal exploitation, including county lines drug trafficking or sexual exploitation. These crimes have a devastating impact on victims and their families, yet the harm is often not immediately recognised. Additionally, some detainees may have experienced abuse or been placed in care settings, where they never had the opportunity to experience different, safer environments. This makes them especially vulnerable, and as a result, we take extra care to ensure their protection and support throughout the custody process. Find out more. |
