‘I’m there to support the family’ – The role of our family liaison officers

Like all emergency services, our officers regularly step in to help members of the public who are going through the worst experience of their life.

This is particularly true when somebody has died, be that in a collision or because of an attack, and suddenly their family are left facing a future without them.

This is where our specially trained family liaison officers come into action.

Whilst the investigative team are there to explore any suspicious or unexplained circumstances surrounding the death, the Family Liaison Officer is there to support the family of the victim.

Alongside their day job, whether that be a detective in our major crime team or working in another policing team, playing a vital role, our family liaison officers guide our victims’ loved ones through the investigation.

Detective Constable Rachel Hall has been working as a Detective for 18 years, with a background in child abuse, online child abuse, serious sexual offences and more recently our Major Crime team. She was the Family Liaison Officer for Sachin Hawkin's family after he was murdered.

Hear more from Rachel.
