We have seen an increase in reports of persons walking down residential streets and trying door handles to see if the door is unlocked.

The only reason they are doing this is to try and gain access to premises, with the intention of committing a burglary.

Below are some easy options, that if put into practice can reduce the risk of you becoming a victim of this type of offence.

·  Ensure doors are locked (even when you are inside during the day)

·  Don't leave a key inside the door if there is a letterbox close to it

·  Don't leave anything valuable in a location where it can be seen from outside

·  At night, close curtains and consider leaving a light on.

·  Consider using a doorbell camera that will alert you if someone approaches your door.

·  Consider fitting dusk to dawn lighting outside your address.

·  Ensure that car keys are left out of sight, and nowhere near an entrance door.

Information to prevent burglaries and other crime prevention advice can be found on the secured by design website. here
